PWP DOES IT AGAIN

Berry Weekend

Nearly thirty of us travelled down to the beautiful little town of Berry to enjoy a Christmas in July dinner and then danced until the wee small hours. We awoke to a delicious country breakfast and then we travelled to the Berry markets were we picked up some bargains and then we made the short trip back home. We had attendance from all branches and it was great to see so many new members meet some new friends and they all agree that we need to go back again soon. Kim C

STATE PRESIDENT'S DESK

RE-SOCIALISING WITH PWP
The importance of the need to re-socialise should not be under-estimated - it is a 'must do' coping strategy - it gets easier every time at Parents Without Partners. Re-socialise in a safe friendly environment.

It is a safe and a no pressure environment. We have all been through a similar situation. We are a down to earth, easy going group. Not having a partner is the norm. We nearly all go to functions on our own. We like our parties as a diversion from worries. You can meet people and make friends. Functions are affordable. There is something to go to every week. You can set the pace for your involvement. You don't have to explain why your on your own.

Some re-socialising tips.
Let a committee member know you are new and don't know anyone - they will introduce you. At functions just join in a group standing around talking and introduce yourself - go with the flow. If someone asks you to dance - consider saying yes - have fun. Why not ask someone for a dance - they are likely to say yes. After a while mix and mingle with different people. Say hello to people you have met at previous functions - use peoples names (first names on name tags). Do come again - it gets a bit easier each time - eventually you will enjoy and look forward to that regular contact with your peers at PWP. Volunteering is the easiest way to get to know people - offer to help take food around - offer to help with the clean up at the end of the night - and soon you will know a few more people.
Ross F, State President, Parents Without Partners NSW
rossemail@gmail.com

PS Ask your Branch President about a ticket for the State Presentation Dinner Dance - you will get to know some more people at your table - have a dance and have a great time - see you there. You can bring non-member friends.

SPECIAL NOTICE – Measures of Australia's Progress: Summary Indicators
Australian Bureau of Statistics

The ABS has just released new information to help Australians assess how our society, economy and environment are developing. Measures of Australia's Progress: Summary Indicators gives a snapshot of national progress over the last decade, using key measures. The publication also includes an article on the relationships between society, economy and the environment.

Findings include:

National income and wealth:
We're generally richer. Australia's real (i.e. adjusted to remove the effects of inflation) net disposable income per person grew by 2.9%, on average, each year between 1996-97 and 2006-07, reaching $39,000 in 2006-07. Australia's real net worth rose at an average rate of 0.9% per year between June 1997 and June 2007, reaching over $254,000 per person in 2007.

Work: Fewer people are unemployed. The unemployment rate fell from 8.3% in 1997 to 4.4% in 2007.

Health: We're living longer. A boy born in 2006 could expect to live to 79 (three years longer than a boy born in 1996) while a girl could expect to reach 83 (two years longer than a girl born in 1996).

Education: We're more educated. In 2007 almost 60% of 25-64 year olds had a non-school qualification (e.g. a degree, diploma or certificate), up from 46% in 1997.

Crime: Crime rates are up and down. There was a small increase in the 'personal crime' (assault, sexual assault or robbery) rate between 1998 and 2005, from 4.8% to 5.3%, however the rate of household crimes (break-ins and motor vehicle theft) fell from 9.0% in 1998 to 6.2% in 2005.

Environment: There are more threatened species. The available data suggests some decline in Australia's biodiversity, partly captured in the rise in the number of threatened birds and mammal species. Between 2000 and 2007 the number of bird and mammal species which were extinct, endangered or vulnerable rose from 153 to 174 (up 14%).

More details can be found in Measures of Australia's Progress: Summary Indicators, 2008 (cat. no. 1383.0.55.001) - click here.

PWP PARENTS REMINDER

We would like to remind our PWP parents that you are responsible for the supervision and well-being of your children at all times during a PWP function, outing or excursion including the school holiday camps. PWP being a volunteer association is NOT able to and does not have the resources, accreditation, screening, licensing or insurance arrangements for assuming child or adolescent care responsibilities. Parents need to be observant where their children are at all times. You are also responsible for the good conduct and behaviour of your children. You need to assess the risks of some activities in relation to the child's age and development. If your child is accompanied by another parent and their children then this is a personal arrangement between the two parents, and other parents or committee members can not be expected to assume responsibility. We need to publish this even though we know most people already understand this.

PWP DOES IT AGAIN

PWP helps celebrate a Birthday
Thank you Ross and my fellow PWP committee members, for your Happy Birthday wishes.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself, along with 15 members of Northside, plus 5 of my family and a few non-PWP friends. After so many people have been recently raving about The "New" Terrey Hills Tavern, a venue located in the Northern Beaches area, I wanted to try this for myself, and now I have, with fantastic results. I booked for 20 and had an overflow. But I could put it down to it being my 60th Birthday and that most of these Northside members came along for that reason and because I'd offered them a good new venue to try. Those who went were all very impressed with the up-market feel with its modern casual design and layout, inside areas, lounges, bistro dining, entertainment and more, which also includes outdoor undercover terraces with heating for cold nights and it will be great for daytime use summer and winter. Plus the food service was efficient, with generous serves and all good value as well. I could not falter anything. I've had only positive feedback from those who attended Saturday night. So I am very likely to host another PWP function there in our next program of October/November. By the way I'm not getting paid for promoting this venue. We all had a great night. Suzee.

STATE PRESIDENT'S DESK

AN ASSOCIATION RUN BY SINGLE PARENTS FOR SINGLE PARENTS.

PWP NSW is in essence a peer support self group. It is an incorporated association registered under the Associations Incorporation Act – as a not-for-profit volunteer association managed by single parents for the benefit of single parents and their children. We are an association with a common bond between members in that we are single parents. We have all been through the major life adjustments of being single again. It is an understanding special community at PWP – sympathetic of those undergoing this major life adjustment again. It is a great diversion to life challenges – somewhere you can go on your own and meet people in a similar situation and make new friends. So let all of us lend a sympathetic ear for new members - and remember when we were going through those early days. Remember to introduce yourself to new members and include them in some group discussions at functions. As a peer support group - it depends on members being there for fellow members. As a self help group it depends on everyone chipping in and helping with functions, with welcoming new members and with help include new members in our activities, discussions and meeting new people. As a self help group - you will get out of PWP as much as you put in - more friends and some positive life experiences in your week. Let's all try to make PWP a friendlier group for guest prospective members and new members.

Help spread the word.

Child Support News – Capacity To Pay Program Raises An Extra $9 Million For Children

In the past financial year, CSA has identified an extra $9 million in child support payments from parents who have a greater capacity to financially support their kids.

  • CSA's Capacity to Pay program looks at separated parents who are suspected of understating their taxable income and therefore paying less or receiving more than the appropriate amount of child support.
  • In the past financial year more than 4000 cases were investigated, which is a four-fold increase from the previous financial year.
  • The Capacity to Pay team found around a third of the cases they looked at needed no further action as the right amount of support was being paid and received.

The Capacity to Pay program is part of the CSA's four-year increased compliance campaign for which the Government provided $162 million with the aim of collecting an extra $460 million for children of separated parents.

Step Families
Considers why step-families are different and challenges some of the myths about stepfamilies.

Factsheet By Relationships Australia 2008

Most people who become a part of a stepfamily are unprepared for the differences.
Stepfamilies are more complex. There are many more family relationships in stepfamilies.
Emotional upheavals. Family members may have experienced distress from the break-up of the previous marriage or relationship. Some may still be grieving for the family they have lost.

Huge changes. All members of the stepfamily, including those living outside the family, must cope with the change and make a number of adjustments.

More parents. There are more parent figures in a stepfamily and the parenting may be shared by someone outside the family.

Different likes and dislikes. There is no common history and different family members may have different ideas about how things are done.

Read in more detail and also read of the Myths About Stepfamilies at http://www.relationships.com.au/advice/building-better-relationsh

[ Thank you to Relationships Australia for the information and the valuable counseling and support services they provide to those separating, divorcing, grieving and to single parents and their families – a truly valuable organisation – an endorsed by Parents Without Partners NSW ]
